Well done to our walkers!

Many congratulations to team 'Epsom Social Action' (James Tarbit, Fiona Drummond, Jane Race, Cllr Darren Dale) who successfully completed the 20-mile Round the Borough Walk on Saturday.

We came in at under 7hrs, and between us raised more than £1,000 for our chosen charities: lendwithcare.org and Epsom Medical Equipment Fund.

Thanks to everyone who sponsored us, your money is going to two fantastic causes!

Round the Borough Walk - this Saturday

This Saturday a group of brave (foolish?!) walkers from Epsom Conservatives will be talking part in the Epsom 'Round the Borough Walk' - a 20 mile circuit around the Epsom & Ewell Borough boundary taking in sites such as Epsom Downs, the Epsom Racecourse, Nonsuch Park and The Hogsmill.

We will be walking in support of two of the charities Social Action is supporting in 2012; lendwithcare and the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund.  Check back on the blog next week to see how we did, or follow our Twitter feed during the event for live updates.

You can still register for the event - walking for your own charity, or the Mayor of Epsom's charities - here.

Wish us luck!

Borough Clean-Up Day - 26th May

This year, Epsom Social Action is working with the Council and other local groups (schools, residents associations, Friends of Parks etc) to support Borough Clean-Up Days. Come along on the 26th May to clean up the town and make our Borough look fantastic for our Jubilee and Olympic visitors.

We will be meeting at Bourne Hall car park at 9.30am, and will be going throughout the day. We will provide all materials, so all you need to do is come and get involved.

Look out for more details nearer the time, but put the date in your diary and let’s get cleaning!

p.s. Not all locations for the clean-up have been confirmed as yet, so if there is a particular area you think needs some attention, get in touch and we will get it cleaned.

2012 campaign - introducing lendwithcare

One of the major campaigns we will be supporting this year through Social Action is the fantastic lendwithcare initiative from CARE International UK.

CARE International UK is one of the world's leading aid and development charities. Working in more than 80 countries, CARE's programmes create lasting change in developing regions around the world, with 94p of every £1 donated going to end users. As well as delivering governance, disaster relief and poverty relief programmes, CARE International also supports entrepreneurs in developing economies through its microfinance initiative - and this is where we come in!

How it works:
lendwithcare gives people the chance to support business owners in the developing world through microfinance loans of as little as £15. Supporters can go onto the website and find a business owner to fund. Loans are then repaid by the entrepreneur over a set period of time, allowing for the money to be reinvested, or donated to CARE International.

You can see a full overview here.

What we will do:
We will be fundraising throughout 2012 for our Epsom Social Action group lending account - all funds will go directly to entrepreneurs, and any repayments will be reinvested. At the end of the year, we will donate the balance to CARE International.

How you can help:
There are two ways for you to donate to this fantastic cause:

1. Make a donation to Epsom Social Action (full details here). Feel free to tell us which kind of business you would like to support - we promise to take everyone's ideas into account when choosing entrepreneurs to support.

2. Sign up for a lendwithcare account. Once you start to make payments, just choose to attribute your loans to 'Epsom Social Action', and they will show up on our page.

We hope that you will take the opportunity to support this fantastic scheme. It's a great way to support overseas development (rather than simple aid), as well as the chance to really see where your money is going.

“I love how lendwithcare puts together people who have money and want to see what their money is doing, with people who need their money. I think that’s a magical combination. You get your money back, and that’s good because it means the project has been successful. But really, I think the success can be measured by the change it has left behind.” (Dragon's Den's Deborah Meaden)

2012 campaigns

Welcome to the brand new Epsom Social Action blog.

We will be using this site to update both members and local residents on our volunteering activities in the Borough and beyond. Please check back soon, as we will shortly be announcing our first campaign for 2012, as well as looking back on excellent campaigns in 2011 with Operation Shoebox and the Community Foundation for Surrey.

Many Thanks,
The Epsom Social Action team
